International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March is a global opportunity to recognise women’s achievements, reflect on progress and continue conversations around equality in every workplace and community. In Plymouth, that spirit is visible year-round, through leaders who improve lives, support families and build trusted local businesses.
This year, OM Magazine is proud to highlight three women whose work is making a tangible difference across the city: Lesley-Ann Simpson of The Chestnut Appeal, Tricia Kennedy of Mortgages 4 Plymouth and Derinda Damarell of KF Kitchens.

As Chief Executive of The Chestnut Appeal, Lesley-Ann Simpson has played a central role in advancing awareness and support for men affected by prostate, testicular and penile cancer. The charity raises vital funds for specialist equipment and technology, while keeping men’s health firmly on the local agenda.
Her leadership has been recognised nationally, with Lesley-Ann awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to men’s health in the New Year Honours. Locally, she is known for her openness and commitment to partnership, regularly sharing progress, encouraging difficult conversations and building networks across healthcare, business and the wider community.
Under her guidance, The Chestnut Appeal has continued to strengthen its presence in Plymouth, ensuring that men’s health receives the focus, funding and visibility it deserves.

Tricia Kennedy founded Mortgages 4 Plymouth in 2000 and has since built a reputation grounded in trust, experience and advocacy. International Women’s Day is more than a date on the calendar. Across Plymouth, women lead charities, advise families, grow businesses and strengthen communities every day. Their contributions shape the city’s health, economy and future.
As 8 March approaches, Plymouth has much to celebrate. When women are supported to lead and succeed, the whole city benefits, not just on International Women’s Day, but all year round.
