Mother’s Day is on Sunday 22nd of March and it’s time to show your mum that you really do care about her. Go and pick up a fresh bunch of flowers and tell her how much you love her!
Mothers and mother-figures are incomparable. They may be the first people we ever know when we enter the world, and they love and care for us as we grow up and beyond. Once a year, countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day; a day dedicated to all mothers or mother figures so that we can show our appreciation.
The fourth Sunday of Lent, otherwise known as Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday, is a time for celebrating all that our Mums have done for us over the years.
Mother’s Day is a tradition that dates back centuries, the day was originally marked by the reunion of mothers with their children who would otherwise be working as apprentices or domestic servants, with this day being a special holiday for children to take time off and visit their families.
With more of us living further away from home and loved ones than ever before, the time we spend with our family on Mother’s Day is all the more special, with many people spending more on Mother’s Day gifts and experiences than any other festivity besides Christmas.
Today, we know Mother’s Day as a day where we acknowledge the incredible things the women in our lives do for us.
Mother’s Day isn’t always about our own mothers, it’s about all mums, step-mums, mothers-in-law, mums to be, nans, grans, sisters, aunties, carers and the list goes on!
Mother’s Day is a chance to make them all feel special for all of the great things they do for us. It’s a day to show love, gratitude and appreciation to all wonderful mums everywhere, through acts of kindness and the giving of Mothers Day gifts and flowers.
Everybody celebrates Mother’s Day in their own way, most commonly it’s a day for family reunions where we wait on hand and foot for our mother’s, whatever they want, we sort it!
But are lavish gifts such as jewellery, gift vouchers or spa days really what mums want for Mother’s day?
As nice as it is receiving gifts, it’s not always necessary. With Mother’s Day becoming as commercial as Valentine’s Day, it’s become less about acknowledging and giving back to your mum and more about spending your money.
There are many things you can do for your mum on Mother’s Day to show her you care without splashing the cash, and she’ll probably appreciate it more anyway!
What more could you want on a day that’s all about you than a nice long, uninterrupted lie in?!
With Mother’s Day occurring on a Sunday, it’s the perfect day to allow mum to enjoy a few more hours in bed than normal without being interrupted by screaming, questions and nagging! You could even treat her to a delicious breakfast in bed after her well earned 12 hours of sleep.
Wouldn’t a nice, hot bubble bath be the perfect mother’s day treat?
Stock up on salts and lotions this Mother’s Day to allow your mum to sit back, relax and unwind for a long soak with a glass of her favourite wine, a new book or a soothing playlist of her best-loved songs blissfully playing in the background.
Let’s face it, most mums despise having a messy home with toys flung across the living room and mountains of washing piles scattered around the house.
So team up, grab some rubber gloves, sponges and the feather duster for a day of scrubbing and polishing. Mum can put her feet up with a cup of tea whilst you do the hard work hoovering and cleaning – don’t forget the washing, ironing and dishes too!
A day of relaxation and peace doesn’t have to be expensive and involve a fancy spa.
Why not take the kids out for the day to give mum a day of rest and pampering. And if you’ve got toddlers then she may even be able to go to the toilet without a 3-year-old hanging from her leg begging for food for the 10th time of the day…the littlest things really do make a difference!
To finish off the day with family time, cook up a feast of mums favourite meal for all to enjoy.
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be all about spending money, it’s about spending time together and showing mum that you really do care and you’re grateful for all of the wonderful things she has done for you.
