Past monthly sales held in 2018 sales have drawn in over 200 mums to be, parents and grandparents each time, as there are some serious savings to be made by buying second hand. With large items like designer prams selling for around a third of the new price and baby and children’s clothes from just 50p, parents can save hundreds of pounds on kitting out their little ones.
All the stalls are held by local parents, who recycle their own children’s outgrown clothes, toys, books and equipment by selling these on and get to keep 100% of their proceeds.
Novice sellers are coached prior to the event with sellers’ tips and pricing guides to maximise their sales on the day.
Mum2mum market was started by Wimbledon mum of two Cath Harrop in 2011 and scooped the Best New Business Award at the Merton Business Awards in 2012 as well as gaining Deborah Meaden’s backing on Dragon’s Den in 2016. Since 2011, the Plympton venue has been holding these regular sales and helping thousands of local parents to both buy and sell in Plymouth, over the years.
Michele, Mum2mum Market South Devon franchisee owner, is delighted to continue organising and running these events in Plymouth and says “everyone warns you how expensive it is for the first couple of years when having a baby and seeing how much things cost when buying new, it’s quite scary how much it can all add up”.
“I have twins and didn’t have time to trawl through the second hand websites and drive to people’s houses for one item at a time. I popped in to one of these Plympton sales and was delighted at what I was able to buy – there was such a great selection! I loved that the items were all priced up (I am personally rubbish at ‘haggling’), all the sellers were really friendly and that I could have a good look at everything before I bought, instead of relying on photos on the secondhand websites”.
“I went in the last half hour of the sale as I was worried about going along with my twin’s double buggy – I had heard these sales get busy. Not only did I get in for free but loads of the items’ prices had been dropped yet again and so came out with my buggy absolutely bursting!”
“It’s such a pleasure running these markets now, as I have the privilege seeing so many happy parents walking out of the doors, laden with so many gorgeous items, as I once did!”
“I work hard to try and ensure each sale has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where everyone is made to feel welcome. It can be such a daunting time for so many mums-to-be and new parents. The sellers, who have all been in (and still are) in their shoes are there to help and make the buyers feel at ease”.
“It’s such a fun, busy morning with buyers laden with bargains and sellers making money for their own families and de-cluttering their homes in the process.”
