Young Plymouth based culinary entrepreneur Simone Nuurah has to be doing something right as she has done it again with the highly recommended Burger and Bones!
18 months ago, the previous burger bar Fabulous Burger Boys came up for sale and as she was their neighbour already the owner of Mr Woks Noodle Bar, she decided to take up a new challenge. This time, she wanted to create the best tasting burgers in Plymouth. The easy option of course would be to expand her already successful noodle bar next door, Mr Wok, however Simone wanted to give Plymouth some more variety.
She saw the original burger bar and said, ‘I am going to take this on and it’s going to be amazing!’ And with that, she gathered a team and came up with a new and exciting menu. This menu took a little longer to get right compared to Mr Wok. Simone has always said that she has a unique sense of taste and she can tell if something needs more salt, less pepper, more spice and so on, therefore, creating the perfect tasting burger took a few chefs and a lot of trial and errors until they were proud of their creation.
Leigha is the current manager of Burger and Bones and has been ever since it was open to the public – 18 months ago. Leigha was approached by Simone as she was originally working for Mr Wok as a delivery driver as well as managing another food chain in Plymouth. Leigha has great experience in the food industry having worked in it for over 13 years. Simone noticed her dedication to the job and her brilliant work ethic and offered her the job as manager and chef at Burger and Bones.
These burgers are not your regular patty, cheese and lettuce in a bun. These have an immense depth of flavour right down to the sauces they pair with it and the added extras. When you gaze upon the menu board, the peculiar and light humoured names surprise you at first, such as ‘Blue Monday Burger’ and ‘Join The ‘Cue Burger’. Written underneath these creative names is a long list of items that all harmonise beautifully together, all stacked on top of one another to create the perfect texture and taste. And it isn’t just meat they have on offer; they also cater for vegetarians with two options of vegetarian burgers; one with halloumi and the other made from mushrooms and beans.
On the menu, beside the burgers are a range of slow cooked goodies from burnt ends to ribs. These ribs are marinated and cooked overnight and their beef brisket and pulled pork is slow cooked for 24 hours which is divinely tender and delicious. Having a browse at their milkshake (‘thick shake’) and dessert menu is enough to be tempted. With 20 flavours of milkshakes and more on their way, from mint Oreo and Haribo to Parma violets and Biscoff, there are loads to choose from!
Sustainability means a lot to Leigha and Simone and they have tried very hard to make their burger bar 95% sustainable. With cardboard in use instead of plastic and a big push to shop for their produce locally, they are doing their bit for the environment.
At Burger and Bones, they don’t like to cheat their customers. They believe that having fresh, local produce is key to the enjoyment of any kind of meal, even a burger and chips! It is clear to us that with Simone’s great sense of taste and Leigha’s skill in kitchen management, they have brought the people of Plymouth a fantastic place to enjoy hearty American food that is ultimately messy to eat but tastes sensational!
