In the centre of Plymouth lies a secret passage that takes you straight to the culinary heart of Thailand. The authentic flavours, vibrant colours and mouth-watering aroma, not forgetting the friendly atmosphere given by the staff, are the reasons behind why Mr Wok has been awarded ‘Plymouth’s favourite noodle bar’. We, the people of Plymouth should feel blessed to have this little slice of Thailand on our doorstep.
Since graduating from the University of Plymouth, after studying business, Simone Nuurah has become her own boss and is the brain child behind Mr Wok Thai Noodle Bar Plymouth. Rewind 5 years, and unbeknown to Simone, she was about to make the best decision of her life. However, she didn’t quite have a plan as to what business she wanted to run, she just knew it was going to be a business. Her love and excitement for food had always been a great passion of hers, this and her acute sense of taste meant that starting up her own food company was an obvious yet required step in the right direction.

With a careful eye on the market she spotted a restaurant that came up for sale. Simone knew this was the right location in the city for her ideas to fluish so she snatched it up instantly. Thai food was becoming increasingly more popular in the city, therefore her ideas aligned nicely. The choice of Thai food compared to Chinese was an obvious a calculated decision for Simone. Having completed a fair bit of primary research, she had noticed that when you eat Chinese food, you instantly ‘crash’ and feel sluggish afterwards, however, with fresh Thai food, you don’t get that ‘crash’ as it is made using less oil and fatty ingredients. Students are also much more open to trying new foods and cultures which meant that this was an exciting new development for Plymouth – only having one Thai restaurant here previously.
Simone worked with her predominantly Thai cultured team to produce the varied and delicious menu that you receive today including popular dishes such as; Thai green curry, Thai red curry, Pad Thai and their best seller, Bubble Tea. Their primary focus was on the quality of the meat and veg. At Mr Wok, they only source their ingredients from a local butcher and a local Cornish farmer, this means that everything is prepped on the day of use therefore nothing is frozen. Simone reckons that even if you are not a food expert, you can tell when the food has been frozen or isn’t fresh by the way it makes you feel afterwards. Because Mr Wok’s food is all prepared and made to order, they have a wide variety of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes on offer, as well as an option to tailor the dish to suit your requirements. Bloom is an original member of the Mr Wok team. Her work ethic is amazing and always has a smile on her face when you walk through the door. She has made a large and positive impact on the business, especially with the menu as she is always creating new ideas and ways to improve. Head chef, Khamrai Harper has also worked with Bloom from the very beginning and brought a tremendous amount of help designing the dishes and running the kitchen. Her work ethic is also excellent and her homemade spicy pork cakes recipe is one of their best sellers – Well worth a try! Bloom had offered the team at OM some of their delicious food to take back to our office and try ourselves. Without hesitation, we thought this would be a great way to understand why this noodle bar is so loved by so many and most importantly why it has received the accreditation of ‘Plymouth’s favourite noodle bar’.
This food did not disappoint at all. We were kindly given a Mr Wok’s chicken chow mien, a green Thai curry, a red Thai curry and a Pad Thai as well as three different flavours of Bubble Tea. The food was not heavy at all, unlike what you would usually expect with Chinese, it was packed full of flavour in every bite and left us wanting more. The Bubble Tea was an exciting new concept to us and we enjoyed tasting and popping all of the bubbles with the varied different flavours.
Mr Wok has pleasantly surprised us with its fresh, local produce, delicious tasting food and friendly staff who love the food they make. It is to no one’s surprise that Mr Wok has been awarded ‘Plymouth’s favourite noodle
bar’ and we are certain it will hold that title for quite some time. How to order from Mr Wok: Visit their online ordering system at http://mrwok.touchtakeaway.net Mr Wok is open 7 days a week 12-late and they deliver to PL1, 2, 3, & 4t: 01752 265 400 w: www.mrwokthainoodlebar.co.uk
