While browsing through the vibrant streets of Plymouth, he stumbled upon Athena’s, a popular prints and posters shop. Two particular posters, radiating tranquillity and beauty, awakened his love for photography and ignited a curiosity within him. Driven by this newfound passion, Mike embarked on a transformative journey to unravel the secrets of capturing breathtaking images with his Nikon D800, setting his sights beyond IT and embracing the artistry of photography. Little did he know that this fateful encounter would forever shape his destiny and lead him on a remarkable expedition to explore the boundless beauty that awaited through the lens of his camera.

Meet Mike Lister, a dedicated, compassionate and hard-working family man. During the week, he immerses himself in his dream job in the vast industry of IT, but amidst the hustle and bustle, he refuses to let go of his burning passion for photography. While balancing two careers may seem overwhelming to many, his camera becomes an extension of his creativity. The click of the shutter and capturing the candid moments bring immeasurable joy, transforming his photography into a labour of love, never burdened by the weight of obligation.

In 2008, fuelling his newfound passion, he invested in his first camera, a Sony compact camera (point and shoot), and a subscription to Digital Photo Magazine, eagerly devouring its wealth of knowledge. With unwavering determination, he immersed himself in a year of relentless practice, honing his skills with a compact camera and mastering the fundamental techniques. Initially drawn to capturing the essence of people and models, he sought to gather valuable experience, gradually building the confidence to embrace new challenges.

Over the next three years and a few camera upgrades later, Mike built up his portfolio and started to attract a new opportunity — weddings. Overwhelmed by the potential stress of such a momentous occasion, Mike hesitated, declining the offer. Yet, fate had different plans. As the requests persisted, a clear demand emerged, urging him to reconsider his decision. With a blend of curiosity and trepidation, he finally accepted the third invitation, recognizing the opportunity to venture into uncharted territory.

Determined to prepare himself thoroughly for the responsibility of capturing someone’s most cherished moments, Mike embarked on a Wedding Workshop in Salcombe. This immersive experience spanned over two days, devoted to both the artistry of photographing couples on their special day and the intricate intricacies of running a successful wedding photography business. Fully aware that he held the key to the once-in-a-lifetime memories, he approached each shot with meticulous care, cherishing the privilege bestowed upon him. After 12 years and countless Weddings, one thing remained constant: the flutter of nerves before each wedding day. Anxious anticipation often drove him to overcompensate, packing his gear with an abundance of caution, ensuring that no precious memory would slip away. Yet, amongst the nerves, one undeniable truth prevailed: Mike’s love for weddings. A magical aura around the joyous occasions, rendering the concept of a bad photo unfathomable. From the bride’s radiant smile to the groom’s elation, every click of his camera captured an abundance of happiness. Within each frame, a symphony of pure bliss unfurled, painting a vivid tapestry of memories that would last a lifetime.

Since establishing in 2014, Mike’s expertise and creative ventures have expanded far beyond the realm of weddings. While capturing the essence of couples’ special days remained a prevalent focus, the ever-changing tide of opportunities called him to explore diverse commercial avenues. Armed with the convenience of a pop-up studio, he ventured into taking headshot photos for businesses, Airbnbs, student lets and even supermarket spaces. As his work continued to expand, weaving together still photography with a new perspective. Mike is a licenced drone operator and taken to the skies, breathing life into cherished moments through moving images.

Understanding the importance of building trust within the commercial industry, Mike took proactive steps to solidify his credibility and registered his company with Buy With Confidence (BWC), an esteemed organisation that receives the backing of Trading Standards. The support from Trading Standards further cemented his dedication to transparency, accountability, and fair business conduct, instilling confidence in every client interaction. Within registering with BWC, Mike is also DBS checked making him well-positioned to cater to school events, including memorable occasions like proms.

Once the photos are prepared, Mike creates an online gallery for the customers to explore. From this collection, they are tasked with selecting their ten favourite images. These chosen photographs will be printed and compiled into a sturdy hardback book. Additionally, all the remaining images are conveniently stored on a USB drive, serving as a digital archive of cherished memories.

Mike finds great inspiration in the works of renowned photographers like Chase Jarvis and The Strobist, who have mastered the art of illuminating their subjects through ingenious lighting techniques. Their work leaves a profound impact on Mike’s creative vision. In Mike’s own words, “As a photographer, you are just painting with light,” reflecting his profound appreciation for the artistry and creativity that stems from skilful mastery of lighting in photography.

Photography is one of Mike’s passions but he’s not ready to bid farewell to his love affair with IT and computers just yet. He revels in the intricate world of technology, finding immense satisfaction in his job. Placing the weight of financial responsibility and unwarranted pressure solely on his photography may extinguish the flame of his love for photography. So, with careful consideration, he’s built a harmonious balance between his two loves. By safeguarding it from the strain of financial expectations, Mike safeguards his unwavering adoration for the art and keeps the creative fire burning bright.

Further down the line, Mike would like to own a studio which is a space that combines a gallery showcasing captivating artwork with a cosy coffee shop. The upstairs would be a studio, providing a haven for individuals to express their creative endeavours. The ultimate goal is to create a community of artists and enthusiasts who can come together and share their passion over a lovely cup of tea.
